This Week in Biology (Dec 6-10)

Dear Parents and students,

It is almost time for Winter break and the students are ready!  But before we go we still need to complete a few things.  Please keep in mind that all missing work must be turned in by Dec. 10th.  No late work will be accepted after that date.  Also, the first draft of the science and stem paper is due before Winter break.   You can find all the information for the Science Fair and the Stem Fest here:

Present Fossil Project

Notes and Practice: 5.10 Classification
Create a diagram of a commonly used evolutionary classification system. Make sure to explain how the classification system works!

Notes and Practice: 5.11 Phylogeny and Cladistics
Answer the following questions:
What is a clade?
What is cladistics, and what is it used for?
Explain why reptiles and birds are placed in the same clade.
Dogs and wolves are more closely related to each other than either is to cats. Draw a phylogenetic tree to show these relationships

Notes and Practice: 5.12 Darwin
Read: 5.13 Influences on Darwin
Darwin Pekemon Cards. Create 2 Pokemon-like cards. Create one showing Darwin and another with an earlier scientist who had ideas about the formation of species. Make sure that you list their powers. On the back of the card, list the primary points of their theories.

Notes and Practice: 5.14 Theory of Evolution
Read: 5.15 Fossils

Explain Darwin’s theory of evolution. What are the strongest points of the theory? What are the weakest areas? What are the controversies in the modern scientific community concerning the theory?

San Tan’s annual Gifted Testing event is approaching quickly! 

If you are interested in having your child tested for giftedness, please complete the digital Parent Request Form, along with the $50 Co-Pay, linked below.  Gifted testing is will be offered in mid. February.   Once a child is identified as gifted, they do not need to retest.  Gifted testing will begin in mid- February.

  • If your child is currently in a gifted class and identified as ‘provisional’ they will automatically be retested, you do not need to send in the recommendation form. : -)
  • Gifted Testing Requests are due no later than January 12th of 2022.
