This Week in Biology (Oct 26-30)

 In Biology, Scholars Prep Science - 7th Grade

Dear Parents and students,

We are back in the thick of it.  The students are now comfortable in class, but this is usually the time when they start to feel like slacking a bit on their academic work.  Some of the students have had trouble concentrating and staying focused as a result.   Please make sure to encourage them and pour praise on them for their hard work.  They are doing very well.

It is time to begin thinking about the Science Fair and STEM Fest.  Students must choose their topic or STEM Fest choice by November 4th. Here is the link for them to choose the topic (must be accessed from a school computer):

This past week a few students innocently brought nut-based snacks to school.  But because of severe allergies, I have been asked to remind everyone about the following:

  •  The following nuts are NOT allowed on campus:  Peanuts, Almonds, Cashews, Beechnuts, Brazil Nuts, Chestnuts, Hazelnuts (NO Nutella), Macadamia Nuts, Pecans, Pistachios, Shea Nuts, Walnuts.

Here is our class schedule for the week:

Biotech Propaganda project

Create a comic book for teenagers that makes the case against or for certain biotechnology practices or applications.

Rubric:  Creativity: 100 pts   Accuracy: 100 pts   5 pages minimum: 100 points      Total: 300 points

Biotechnology Fair Day 1

Read comics to the group (15 minutes)

Prepare for the Biotechnology Debate:

1)  Break into 2 groups (for or against)

2)  Work in your groups to research and make your case in the debate tomorrow (use attachment “biotechnology-debate-research”)

Biotechnology Fair Day 2

Biotechnology Debate:  Divide into two groups and make a case for or against biotechnology.

10 minutes:  Finish preparing your case with your grous.

30 minutes:  Debate!

Instructional videos for each day are found in your CK-12 reading.
All Practices must be completed with at least 80% accuracy to receive credit.
All work is due Friday by 3:30 PM
