This Week in Biology (Aug 10-14)

In Biology, Scholars Prep Science - 7th Grade

Dear Parents and students,

It has been my pleasure to work with your students this past week.  I am very impressed with them.  This week we will be discussing dna, various biological reactions, and acids and bases.  Your student will need a few supplies for the labs this week. Please ask them to look over the labs and see what they need each week.  For instance, this week they will need red cabbage in order to make litmus paper.  Please let me know if you need any assistance with ths.

Here is our class schedule for the week:

Monday
1.11  Proteins
1.12  Lipids
1.13  Nucleic Acids
Read and take Notes: 1.1, 1.2 & 1.3
Complete the practice on section 1.3 only.
Lab: Modeling DNA

Tuesday
1.14  Biochemical Reactions
1.15  Energy and Biochemical Reactions
1.16  Types of Biochemical Reactions
Read and take Notes: 1.14, 1.15 & 1.16
Complete the practice on 1.16 only.
Project: Research different types of biochemical reactions.  Create an artistic diagram for 3 types of reactions.  Please make sure to label your diagram appropriately.

Wednesday
1.17  Enzymes
1.18  Enzyme Function
Read and take Notes: 1.17 & 1.18
Complete the practice on 1.18
NO PROJECT TODAY – use this time to start on labs for Thursday and Friday

Thursday
1.19  Water and Life
Read and take Notes: 1.19
NO PRACTICE TODAY
Lab:  Water Properties Lab (Attached)

Friday
1.20  Acids and Bases
Read and take Notes: 1.20
NO PRACTICE TODAY
Lab:  The Ups and Downs of PH (Attached)
You will need litmus paper for this.  But you can make it at home if you don’t have any:
Boil RED cabbage until the water is a red-purple color
Cut paper into small strips.
Put paper strips into the solution and leave them there to soak.
Take them out and leave to dry.
Your litmus strips are now ready to use!

Instructional videos for each day are found in your CK-12 reading.
All Practices must be completed with at least 80% accuracy to receive credit.
All work is due Friday by 3:30 PM
